Effects of Social Media on Body Image

Social media has become a huge part of everyday life, especially for young adults. Apps like Instagram and TikTok are filled with pictures and videos of people who seem to have the "perfect" body, skin, and lifestyle. While this content can be entertaining, it can also have negative effects on how people see themselves. Many people will end up comparing their own appearance to what they see online, even subconsciously, which can lead to feeling insecure or not good enough. Research shows that these constant comparisons can lower self-esteem and increase body dissatisfaction (Cabezas-Klinger, 2025).

One reason social media has such a strong impact is because it encourages comparison. People often compare themselves to influencers, celebrities, or even their own friends. These comparisons are usually unrealistic because people only post their best moments. Studies havefound that this type of comparison is directly linked to negative moods and lower confidence (Applied Social Psychology, 2023). Over time,
constantly seeing "better" versions of others can make someone feel like they don't measure up and lead to insecurities.

Another issue is the use of filters and editing tools. Many images online are altered to look more attractive, which creates unrealistic beauty standards. When young adults see these edited images over and over, they may start to believe that these standards are normal or expected. This can lead to frustration and dissatisfaction with their own appearance. Even content meant to be positive, like fitness posts, can sometimes have negative effects depending on how it is viewed (Applied Social Psychology, 2023). Even children using Snapchat filters on their parents' phones can end up causing them to grow up with unrealistic standards for themselves.

Social media can also affect mental health in more serious ways. Spending a lot of time online has been linked to higher levels of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem (Cabezas- Klinger, 2025). When someone constantly feels like they are not good enough, it can impact their overall happiness and well-being. This is especially important for young adults, who are still developing their identity and confidence. Being insecure or not having enough confidence can definitely lead to anxiety and depression in the future.

In addition, social media creates pressure to look a certain way and gain approval from others. Many users feel like they need likes, comments, or followers to feel valued. This can lead to stress and make people focus too much on their appearance instead of who they are as a person. According to research on social media and society, these platforms. Can shape how people think about themselves and their place in the world (Applied Social Psychology, 2023).

Overall, social media can have a powerful negative impact on body image and self-esteem. Constant exposure to unrealistic standards and comparisons can slowly change how young adults see themselves negatively. Understanding these effects is important because it can help people become more aware of how social media influences their thoughts, feelings, and self-worth, and help them make a change for the better.
